There are plenty of gadgets which can play music: iPods, CD players, and portable stereo systems are just some of them. Now researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems have come up with a new idea that is almost as small and easy to manufacture as the previous inventions. The device they call "Memex" is basically a little mechanical robot that can play music. It is only as big as a postage stamp, uses record-press technology and produces music at the same time it records it. The idea came to the researchers after they saw photos of the mammoth recording device which plays music from Astrud Gilberto's "The Girl from Ipanema." "The mechanical device", they wrote, "is also a music player and printer (handy for transcribing illegal tunes and analog recordings)." The robot plays a record (and even makes copies of it), and its movements are programmed so that it follows the recorded music with its hands. It is controlled by a computer which adjusts the position of the robot's arms. Memex has a song-recording head which can sit on a turntable and a record-playing spindle which has to be manually lowered and raised. The researchers describe Memex as a "stand alone mobile robot of modest dimensions." The only other problem with this idea is that it costs several hundred euros (thousands of dollars) to build. If the researchers can find a cheaper alternative to mass-producing the robot, then it could be affordable for schools and clubs, and would be very fun to build. The researchers are working on an alternative to Memex called "Mechanical Knowledge Repository" (MARK). This robot is less complex to build and is intended to "guide" the operator. According to the researchers the aim of MARK is to make it "easy for people to learn their desired task from an enormous and complex collection of recorded demonstrations." But just how much easier is still to be seen. in the Fourth Circuit, that an "[i]mproper objection" cannot "provide a basis for relief under § 2255." Id. The Court also said that the term "improper objection" should not include an "overlooking Download Kaspersky Keys Software and follow the steps to get the key file. The electrolytes tested were sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride, potassium bicarbonate and sodium citrate. For all tests, ninety kiwifruits were used at random from a local market. The results were analysed using analysis of variance. The mean pH values ranged between 4.8 and 5.6. The optimal electrolyte was determined to be potassium bicarbonate (Ke = 5.3). Results from this study provide basic information for future experimentation on kiwifruit. The earliest clinical manifestations of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are conceptualized as reflecting cholinergic/amyloid defects. The principal source of this concept is that postmortem examination of late stage AD brain reveals a striking loss of muscarinic cholinergic receptors (mAChR) and cholinergic neurons, deficits that are the most consistent neurochemical markers of the disease. Our overall goal is to develop animal models that would more closely simulate the progression of the disease in order to more clearly define the functional consequences of this loss. This proposal is focused on the role that mAChR plays in hippocampal long term potentiation (LTP) and spatial memory. We will use single cell electrophysiological recording techniques to investigate three different hypotheses regarding the role of mAChR in LTP and memory. 1) that an inherent cellular "weakness" in the M1 subtype of mAChR makes it more susceptible to neurodegenerative insults, 2) that a lack of M1 mAChR function is a key substrate for memory deficits, and 3) that an increase in M1 function during the induction of LTP will ameliorate its long term facilitation. An understanding of the role of mAChR in memory requires knowledge of normal function in the intact, behaving animal. The studies proposed will develop a novel behavioral system to directly assess an M1 antagonist's effects 648931e174
